I think the promise of mystery is a more powerful storyteller than the story itself. Why get bogged down in the details, the nitty gritty plot holes and hard-to-accept premise when you could, in the broadest possible sense, take in an arc of emotion so vague and amorphous it could never be anything other than a reflection of the best story known to man?
That’s what a good film trailer is. Ever watched a trailer so amazing that when you watched the film you could only be disappointed? I have, and I will again, because the trailer as a storytelling medium is so wonderful.
Story content: minimal. An brief impression of a troubled world, hope, sacrifice. Fill the gaps with the most potent storyweaving device any human has ever possessed – your imagination. Details only get in the way.
